Peak Design Travel 45l Backpack X-Pac edition

An Excellent travel camerabag

PeakDesign, the creator of the best camera accessory tool- the Capture Clip, whichenables mounting for cameras on any backpack shoulder straps also makes amazingfeature rich premium travel backpacks.

I have herethe Peak Design 45l Travel Backpack Coyote. Granted, this is a special editionin collaboration with sailcloth manufacturer X-Pac. Crafted from 100% recycledfishing nets- making this special edition backpack even more solid andprotective than the standard edition. This special edition does not make the standardobsolete in any kind of way- as I have used the standard in black for quitesome time without any hiccups. However, I do prefer the colour way on thecollab edition. The textile also feels quite different from the standard. Bothversions are great and feels good at touch- but different.

Who is this bag for?

This is agreat everyday large carry-on friendly (most flights, may vary) camerabackpack. Excellent for commuting, studio photography, the office, andoccasional short treks- thanks to the in-built stowable hip belt. I use itevery day on public transport to work with a laptop, basic camera gear, tablet, accessories, and a large lunch box. The weather sealing is superb. Essentialfor living on the Norwegian West Coast- where it rains a lot.

PeakDesign- as said in an interview with PetaPixel podcast (photography orientedjournalistic podcast on YouTube) that their bags are on the affordable end ofhigh-end bags. The brand focus on the photographer marked, making gear forthose who enjoy travelling and taking pictures- for their own pleasure orprofessional.

For NordicTraveller to recommend a travel backpack, certain criteria must be met.

·      Back opening access to all cameragear

·      Completely weather sealed- withoutrain fly

·      The possibility to attach more gearon all five sides (the 6th side is on your back- five are available)

Let’s talk moreabout it.

Back access

I have seenmanufactures who offer what they describe as travel camera backpacks that havetheir opening in front. That is a big no-no as a photographer for two specificreasons. Security and access. If the access is in front, there will be anincreased risk of your gear damaged by the weather, as zippers are weak points inthe construction of any backpack. Exposed to severe weather, water can penetrateand ruin your expensive gear. One argument for why that is not a big deal is touse a rain fly to cover the front. But that is not ideal. For one, a travelcamera backpack should perform well even during harsh weather. Second, you arethen blocking the access to your gear, and have to take of the rain fly toretrieve or store gear- which is not ideal. That is why a back opening designis the de facto way to access your gear when designing a travel camera backpack. The zippers to open the backpack is more protected, as it is pressed against your back- reducing the risk ofwater penetration. If you want to attach a rain fly in front, it will nothinder the access to your gear when you need to place the backpack on theground to access gear.

Furthermore,a front opening design means that you must place the back on the ground. As anytravel photographer can tell you- the ground is always wet or dirty. When youmount your backpack on your back again, your clothes are going to take up thedirt and water.

The secondreason for why a front opening design is unacceptable for any travel backpackfor photography is because people could easily steal your gear when in crowdedspaces. Not problematic in Norway, as its quite safe. However, the world isbig. Any travel bag should not be limited to certain safe countries. Then itsnot a travel backpack by Nordic Traveller’s standards, but a mere fashion bag.

Weather Sealing

This onekind of builds one the earlier point. Weather sealing is extremely important.Sealed zippers, durable outer shell that can withstand more than 10 000 mmof water, moist control if used in wet condition to avoid moisture and damages.A travel camera backpack- or any backpack for travel must function excellent inharsh conditions without a rain fly.

External attachment points

Having the possibilityto attach gear externally is also essential, wether it´s a tripod, garment, ora pair of skis. A slot for water bottles is the bare minimum. To be a truetravel camera backpack the choice of attachment is yours. Wether its on theside, front, top or bottom.

The Case of Peak DesignTravel 45l Backpack

Based onNordic Travellers criteria- the Peak Design Travel 45l backpack is a recommendedbackpack for travel. This backpack is great for anything but hiking and skiing, where Peak Design offer the Outdoor series for travel & adventure. Theallure of one-bag for everything is something I have always tried to achieve, but it´s an illusion. The spectrum of travel & adventure is extremely broad. On one hand it can be city-jumping by plane, inter-rail and activities that doesnot require hiking in rough terrain for several hours. On the other hand, it ishiking, camping, climbing, and skiing etc.

Thespectrum is so broad that you cannot create a bag that covers the entire genre. However, The Peak Design 45l Travel backpack and Peak Design Outdoor 45l backpackare designed to cover both end of the spectrum, with overlap. You can beconfident that if you bring the Travel Backpack instead of the Outdoor model,it will do well when you need to do a short trek. Granted, there are featureson both bags which makes one more ideal than the other in certaincircumstances.

If only I could get one

I have andneed both. The Travel model is excellent for daily life and commuting and canoverlap as an adventure backpack as well- even for hiking shorter treks. TheOutdoor is essential for the work I do at Nordic Traveller- where I need waymore comfort walking on terrain and have a water reservoir sleeve.

Then there is the questionof which one you should get

If you donot need the distinctive features the Travel backpack offers daily, then theOutdoor backpack is a far better alternative. If you are the kind of person whoneed a backpack for both travel and adventure, the outdoor is excellent, even fordaily commute to work and gym.
